Meticulously handmade in the coastal state of Nayarit, Mexico. The designs and artwork pass from one generation to the next, created through century old traditions.
The necklaces are made with glass beads and each necklace is a unique design including different flower motifs, peyote or hikuri (sacred medicine of the Wixarika or Huichol people of Mexico). This type of visionary art takes long hours weaving the beads in a special and colourful combination. All our necklaces are handmade by artisans in the Mexico Huichol community.
The Huichol are an indigenous tribe of Mexico, originated in the state of San Luis Potosí. They have lived for at least 15,000 years according to carbon dating of the ashes from their sacred fireplaces. They currently live in northern Jalisco, part of Nayarit, Zacatecas and Durango, in isolated areas up in the mountains running through these states and have managed to preserve their very old traditions, for which they are very proud. They refer to themselves as Wixarika. It is not known whether the word Huichol is a variation of Wixarika.
The mountains are inhabited by the mystical culture of the Huichol community; they are strongly inspired by and mother nature which you can see clearly in their art. The most recurring symbols being; moons, suns, trees, labyrinths, spirals, mountains and cosmic oceans.
There are towns of Huichol artists who have maintained total freedom from external influence, ensuring their art is the purest reflection of the natural habitat in which they inhabit, their culture and their religion.
